Macau Tidbits: Zaia vs. THODW

March 13, 2011

I tried to let myself cool off a bit after watching Franco Dragone’s The House Of Dancing Water (THODW) before writing this comparison with Cirque du Soleil’s ZAIA. I wanted to think it all out before making any errors that I would punch myself for in the future.

I watched the ZAIA last year, and just watched THODW last week. Before I go into any of my opinion-divulging, basic information to share:

ZAIA [ Official Website ]
Cirque du Soleil
Location: The Venetian Macau, Cotai Strip
Shuttle bus available from Macau Ferry Terminal, China Border Gate. Unsure if shuttle service is available from the Airport.
Schedule: Changes every week. Mainly 5pm and 8pm. Sometimes 3pm. Check complete official schedule.
Ticket categories: 4 categories: VIP, Reserve A, Reserve B, Reserve C, Adult & Child price available. Pricing table.
Seating notes: n/a

The House of Dancing Water [ Official Website ]

Shuttle bus available from Macau Ferry Terminal, China Border Gate, Macau Tower, Sintra Hotel. Unsure if shuttle service is available from the Airport.
Schedule: 5pm and 8pm, NO SHOWS on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Check ticketing website.
Ticket categories: 4 categories: VIP, Reserve A, Reserve B, Reserve C, Adult and Child price available. Click on "Tickets Only" in main page for pricing table.
Seating notes: Front row seats (say first 3 rows) may catch rain/water splashes. Also, the theatre is round, seatings in the 2 ends of the "U" shape may miss out on background props.

Well, I shall say that again, I watched ZAIA last year, so I’m not so sure about the plot line, but it was something about a girl dreaming about the skies and the outer space. THODW, on the other hand… despite it being fresh in my mind, I have no idea what it was about… just some Lady Gaga look-alike queen locking a girl away.

Not wanting to delve too much into actual plot-lines, my opinion, is that, ZAIA is the winner here. It was easy to understand, the costumes are very nice, the acrobatics, skills, choreography, and music are wonderful. Perhaps it’s also because I liked all the dreaming aspect of ZAIA too, so I like ZAIA a lot more than THODW.

THODW, is pretty much the same like ZAIA. Yes, THODW is a lot more impressive in the technological sense, but I don’t think that alone is enough to make it "the best show". What’s so special with their technology? The ground, or stage, of THODW can change from solid ground to deep pool of water in less than a minute. So we see acrobatics and extreme diving in the same show. But that’s it. The music is nice, but you can’t buy the soundtrack – it’s not available for sale. I was a bit confused by the story line. The costumes are nice, but not stellar. Choreography, hm….

THODW does have a motorbike show which ZAIA doesn’t have. I was pretty impressed by that. It’s my first time watching a live motorbike show (those jumping over things show?). However, that doesn’t really make THODW so much more different from ZAIA.

If I may make such a statement, to me, THODW is just ZAIA, but with some water.

When it comes to shows, I’m not too picky of the pricing, but I guess for a family show it does make a difference. The Adult ticket prices are a nice tie between the two shows, but for children prices, ZAIA wins again. Besides, there is a lot of strong lighting and booming noise effects for THODW, so younger children might get frightened off by that.

One more rant for THODW… I hate that backdrop/background goddess that appears and does nothing. It irks me so. Can’t they cut her out of the show? Doesn’t serve a purpose at all.
So… I guess that’s it for this? Finally, I have one topic off my draft list now >:D
I hope anyone visiting Macau and considering either one of the shows may find this helpful. Of course, if you go to both shows, you may gain your own impression 🙂

XXI Macau Arts Festival

March 12, 2010

It’s that time of the year again: time to start contemplating on what shows to watch in the Macau Arts Festival.

The online program is still not available and so I’m looking at the printed one that came with the newspaper today.

I already have my eyes on a few shows which already makes me eligible for the 40% discount. I’m now asking friends to see who wants me to help out with ticket buying. I’m sure there will be a queue already early on, so I have to get ready for that as well.

I’m really eager to get tickets for the Patua show. The Dóci Papiaçám di Macau Drama Group are usually hilarious, and this year their act is about food, a very interesting topic in Macau.

Did you know that old Macanese women literally safekeep their recipes to their last breath? I’ve heard friends say their grannies only passed their master recipe books to their moms when the grannies were in their deathbed.

I can’t wait till May! ^^

Macau, Macau, and Macau

July 25, 2009

Today was HOT! Hot and humid!

I had to work today, so when all was done, I went to central area to have a look around, when I passed by the Tourist Office, and so I decided to go in and get the current issue of Macau Pier. I had a late lunch while going over it.

Well, recently I read an interview/article in the Macau Daily Times about the author of Macau Nohohon, Ms. Misa Kawata. (MDT 22 July Cover Link / Article Link), and something she said about Macau Pier made me want to see for myself if it’s true or not – and apparently it is! In Macau Pier, everything is just about casinos, posh hotels, and posh restaurants. In fact, there is nothing “homely” with the articles and ads in Macau Pier!  Of course that’s not Macau!

I bought my first Macau Nohohon in April (or was it March?) when I was taking a tourist friend around town :3 I had wanted to practice more of my Japanese reading comprehension, but up till now I still haven’t properly opened that guide to break down the sentence structures yet 😛

Right, so after my late lunch of Caesar Salad and Iced Mocchachino, I continued to walk around town, and I decided to show you this photo of a local “cafe”, 九記. Very traditional, and this has Macau’s best home-made ice cream! (Well, second only to my Dad’s, but he’s not selling his ice cream, so that’s just family privilege!) The ice cream + soda is a must try. I’m talking about this place because I see a Haagen Dazs just down 2 shops. I’m a bit worried of the competition, but I think this place will persevere.

25072009469The MDT interview mentions that there will be 4 issues of Macau Nohohon, and I am looking forward to collecting them all!

Meanwhile, I have to go back practicing more Japanese! Don’t forget I’m going to Osaka in September~!

Gathering with Sister Marie

April 19, 2009

I usually wouldn’t be posting photos of people but I think this is too memorable not to… That would be (from left) my sister, Sr, Marie, and me.

On 18 April 2009, we had a dinner gathering with Sr. Marie. She was our primary school principal, and everyone loved her very much. We still do! It’s been 14 years since I’ve seen her… I remember there was a gathering a few years back too, but then I wasn’t able to join then.

I was very lucky that in this gathering I got a prize! It’s this… container thingie. It’s not Made in China, which is what makes this so special.

We sang the school song (it was really hard, it has been over 15 years not singing that!) We took photos, we found old friends… it was a really nice gathering…
